Hyderabad is set to add another international name to its fast-growing higher education landscape. The University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) has received a Letter of Intent from India’s University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish a degree-granting location in Hyderabad.

If the planned campus moves through the remaining regulatory process, CU Denver expects to welcome its first students in Hyderabad in August 2027.
A first for Telangana
CU Denver says the Hyderabad location would be the first foreign university location in Telangana and the first public American university authorised to establish a degree-granting location in India under the current framework.
The university’s announcement comes as India increasingly opens its higher education sector to international institutions. The UGC introduced regulations in 2023 allowing eligible foreign universities to establish campuses in India, subject to regulatory requirements.
What will students be able to study?
The Hyderabad location is initially expected to focus on areas with strong demand in the job market, including business, computing, engineering and analytics. CU Denver says the academic model will combine classroom learning with applied and experiential education, interdisciplinary problem-solving and career preparation.
More programmes could be proposed to the UGC from the second year onwards as the institution develops.
Why Hyderabad?
For CU Denver, Hyderabad offers more than a new geographical base. The university already has a long-standing connection with Indian students who have studied in the United States, and says the new location will bring that international academic connection closer to students in India.
Hyderabad has also been positioning itself as a major technology, research and knowledge hub. A campus focused on computing, engineering, analytics and business fits closely with the city’s existing technology ecosystem and the demand for globally oriented professional education.
Who will help establish the campus?
Global education company Emeritus will work with CU Denver as its strategic joint venture partner in India, supporting the university’s establishment and growth on non-academic functions.
First batch expected in August 2027
CU Denver says it will continue working through the required regulatory processes and consult academic, industry and other stakeholders as the Hyderabad institution takes shape. The first cohort is currently planned for August 2027.
For Hyderabad, the development is another sign of the city’s growing role in India’s international education story. The real test now will be how the campus translates that global brand into programmes, affordability, industry links and opportunities for students on the ground.
