Rosemont, IL – June 29:
The World Tablighi Ijtema held from June 27–29 at the Rosemont Convention Center in Chicago witnessed a historic turnout of believers from over 50 countries. Muslims, united by a shared purpose ‘to revive the commandments of Allah SWT and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad PBUH gathered at one place in what seemed like a fortified display of spiritual dedication.
The sprawling venue was filled wall to wall – not with fanfare or commercial stalls – but with humility as Zikr (remembrance of Allah), Qur’an recitation, and heartfelt duas filled the air. What made the event unique is its approach. According to Chicago Muslim Medical Alliance President Dr Mohammed Tajammul Hussain, “With no fundraising, no entry tickets, and no formal organization, this gathering reminded many of the early days of the Tablighi movement that began in Mewat, India with simple sincerity and quiet devotion.”
Spiritual scholars and mashayikh who are typically in demand globally for their wisdom, graced the gathering without charging a single penny, he added while speaking to GAWAH. Their speeches, and demeanor, carried the light of Islam, in the process, inspiring many to introspect, repent, and reaffirm their spiritual goals.
Every element of the Ijtema reflected simplicity and unity. From smiling volunteers serving warm meals at just $6–7 per person, to participants eating food while seated on the floor – shoulder to shoulder, irrespective of race, status, or nationality. There were no VIPs. Only people united by their religion.
Attendees slept on the ground, carried their own bedding, and rose in the early hours for tahajjud and collective supplication. The atmosphere was one of rare tranquility – a taste of the life led by the Prophet’s companions.
The local support was equally heartwarming. The owner of the Rosemont Convention Center, a non-Muslim, was deeply moved by the conduct of the attendees. He not only assisted personally but also expressed eagerness to host the Ijtema again. A number of local non-Muslim politicians and physicians visited the gathering and left with a positive impression of Islam’s message of peace, unity, and surrender to the Creator.
Women fasted and prayed from their homes. Men worked tirelessly on the ground. And everyone wept, prayed, and hoped that Allah SWT had accepted them, without the need for any intervention by the law enforcement personnel.
As one speaker eloquently put it:
“All the solutions to the Ummah’s problems lie in one sentence: Obey Allah SWT and follow the Sunnah of His beloved Prophet ﷺ – with sincerity and humility.”
