Hyderabad, July 16, 2024 — Chief Minister Sri A. Revanth Reddy conveyed a heartfelt message on the occasion of Muharram. He emphasized the significance of sacrifice and tolerance that the event symbolizes. The Chief Minister highlighted that Muharram is observed to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).

Muharram also marks the beginning of new year for Muslims.

CM Revanth Reddy reflected on the rich tradition of communal harmony in Telangana, where Hindus and Muslims participate together in the mourning procession known as ‘Peerla Panduga’. This unique practice, prevalent in Telangana villages, serves as a testament to the ‘Ganga Jamuni Tehzeeb’ — the syncretic culture of the region that represents unity and mutual respect among diverse communities.

“Muharram is more than a religious observance; it stands as a bridge for unity and harmony among people, transcending caste and religion,” stated Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. He underscored the event as a powerful reminder of the values of sacrifice, patience, and brotherhood.

The Chief Minister called on the people of Telangana to continue upholding these values, fostering an environment of peace and solidarity. He expressed hope that the spirit of Muharram would inspire everyone to work towards a harmonious and inclusive society.

In Hyderabad, huge processions are held to commemorate the great sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). Thousands of Shia Muslims take to the streets indulging in self-flagellation, and Bibi ka Alam procession has been drawing huge crowds, every year on the 10th day of Muharram, which falls on 17th July this year.
