For dozens of families from Hyderabad, a pilgrimage of devotion turned into a nightmare in the early hours of November 17. As a lone survivor’s frantic message reached home, the first signs of a catastrophe began to surface. The hours that followed revealed the scale of a tragedy that shook two nations.
Early November 2025 – The Pilgrimage Begins
- Around 46 Umrah pilgrims, most from Hyderabad and nearby districts, depart for Saudi Arabia on 9 November 2025.
- They perform their Umrah in Mecca and make plans to continue to Madina to visit the Prophet’s Mosque, as is customary for many Indian pilgrims.
THE NIGHT OF THE TRAGEDY
17 November 2025, Around 1:30 AM IST – The Collision
- The pilgrims’ bus, travelling from Mecca to Madina, approaches a stretch of highway near Mufrihat, roughly 25 km before Madina.
- A diesel tanker is travelling on the same route.
- According to early assessments, the bus apparently rear-ends the tanker, causing a massive rupture of the fuel compartment.
- Within seconds, the tanker ignites. The fire spreads to the bus, turning it into a blazing inferno.
- Many passengers, asleep at the time, are unable to react. Flames engulf the rear first, blocking the exit.
- The heat is so intense that even rescuers struggle to approach.
THE FIRST SIGNS BACK HOME
17 November 2025, Minutes After the Crash – The Survivor Sends a Message
- Mohammad Abdul Shoaib, seated near the front, is thrown forward on impact.
- Dazed, injured, and disoriented, he manages to crawl out through a broken front window.
- As the fire grows, he sends a short, terrified text message to his family in Hyderabad:
“Accident… bus on fire… please pray.” - His family immediately tries to call back, but the line drops.
- This single text becomes the first alert in India that something catastrophic has happened.
17 November 2025, Early Morning (India) – Confusion & Panic Spread
- Victim’s family calls up AIMIM Asaduddin Owaisi late night seeking help.
- Owaisi expressed public grief over the tragedy, acknowledging that many of the victims were from his constituency in Hyderabad.
- He reached out to the Indian Embassy in Riyadh (via the Deputy Chief of Mission) for detailed information about the incident and the victims.
- He urged the central government to bring back the bodies of the deceased Indian pilgrims and to facilitate fast, dignified repatriation.
- Families begin calling each other, trying to piece together information.
- Several relatives receive unreadable voice notes, half-heard crying in the background, and broken calls that go silent.
- WhatsApp groups of Hyderabad pilgrims’ families fill with frantic messages.
- Helpless travel agents involved in managing the tour avoid public, keep Hyderabad offices closed.
