Safdariya Girls High School Celebrates 90th Anniversary

Hyderabad, September 03: Safdariya Girls High School, a landmark institution in Humayun Nagar, marked a significant milestone on September 3, 2024, by celebrating its 90th anniversary. Founded in 1934 by the distinguished philanthropist and reformist, Begum Sughra Humayun Mirza, the school has been a beacon of education and empowerment for young girls for nearly a century.

As part of the 90th anniversary celebrations, a scholarship distribution program was held on the school premises. Meritorious students were recognized and awarded cash prizes, generously sponsored by Dr. Ghousia Sultana, Founder of the Ghiasuddin Memorial Society in Chicago. The event was graced by journalist and author of The Kohinoors Mr. Khaled Shahbaaz, who served as the Chief Guest. Esteemed speakers, including Dr. Turab Ali Khan, social activist and poet Tajammul Fatima Taj, and the school’s Secretary-Correspondent, Mr. Humayun Ali Mirza, addressed the gathering, reflecting on the school’s storied history and its ongoing mission to empower young women through education.

Begum Sughra Humayun Mirza, despite lacking formal education herself, was home-tutored in Persian and Urdu. She became a celebrated poet and author, known for her progressive thoughts on women’s rights. Writing under the pen name “Haya,” she was an ardent activist dedicated to the empowerment of women, laying the foundation for the school’s values. The Sugra Humayun Mirza Waqf, which oversees the school’s management, continues to uphold the high standards and values she envisioned, ensuring that her legacy of education and empowerment endures.

This 90th-anniversary celebration not only honoured the school’s rich heritage but also highlighted its ongoing commitment to nurturing future generations of empowered women. The school is now looking ahead to its centenary in 2034.
