Hyderabad: Beyond his role as the final Messenger of Islam, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is remembered for his exceptional moral character. The Qur’an testifies to this, declaring him as the “best example” for all of mankind. As Muslims commemorate Milad-un-Nabi 2025, it is important to reflect on the Prophet’s ethics — not in theory but in practice.
Quranic Emphasis on Character
- Surah Al-Qalam (68:4): “And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”
- Surah Al-Ahzab (33:21): “There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.”
Practical Examples from the Prophet’s Life
1. Forgiveness at the Conquest of Makkah
When Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) returned to Makkah as a victor, many of his former enemies feared revenge. Instead, he declared: “No blame will there be upon you today. Go, for you are free.” (Seerah Ibn Hisham). This act of forgiveness changed hearts and drew thousands to Islam.
2. Compassion Towards the Poor and Orphans
The Prophet would personally mend his clothes, milk his goat, and help the needy. He said: “The one who cares for an orphan and myself will be together in Paradise like this,” and he held his two fingers together. (Sahih al-Bukhari).
3. Honesty in Trade
Before Prophethood, he was known as Al-Ameen (the trustworthy). He never cheated in trade, and even his enemies entrusted him with their belongings, confident in his honesty.
4. Respect for Women
The Prophet raised the status of women at a time when they had few rights. He said: “The best of you are those who are best to their wives, and I am the best among you to my wives.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi).
5. Dealing with Abuse with Patience
When insulted or mistreated, he responded with patience. A famous example is the woman who would throw trash on him daily. One day when she did not appear, he visited her home to check on her health. Moved by his kindness, she eventually accepted Islam.
