Hyderabad, November 14: In a result carrying both political weight and symbolic resonance, Congress candidate V. Naveen Yadav secured a decisive victory in the Jubilee Hills Assembly by-election, defeating BRS nominee Maganti Sunitha Gopinath by a comfortable margin and reclaiming the high-profile seat for the ruling party.
The bypoll, held after the passing of former MLA Maganti Gopinath, evolved into a closely watched contest shaped by emotional appeals, development narratives and strategic campaigning. Despite the natural sympathy wave toward the BRS candidate, voters in Jubilee Hills rallied behind Yadav and handed him a clear mandate.
Former India cricket captain and Telangana Minister Mohammed Azharuddin added significant energy to the Congress campaign by joining Yadav during key phases of canvassing. Azharuddin, known for drawing strong crowds as a star campaigner, helped amplify the party’s message during community meetings and neighbourhood interactions across the constituency. Party workers said his presence boosted visibility and connected well with urban voters.
Counting trends reflected this momentum. Yadav gained an early edge and steadily increased his lead through successive rounds, eventually sealing a convincing victory in one of Hyderabad’s most prestigious constituencies. Jubilee Hills is known for its mix of urban professionals, young voters and civically active residents.
For the Congress, the win is being read as a strong endorsement of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s governance approach and the party’s growing appeal in urban pockets. Leaders celebrated the outcome as evidence that the government’s initiatives are resonating with middle-class and aspirational voters.
The BRS, which had hoped to retain the seat through continuity and sympathy, suffered a setback despite a disciplined campaign. Analysts noted that relatively low voter turnout, a recurring trend in affluent areas, increased the impact of targeted mobilization and on-ground organization.
With the bypoll concluded, attention now turns to how the Congress will build on this mandate and how the opposition will recalibrate its strategy in Hyderabad’s evolving urban political landscape.
