In Chicago, Khabib Delivers a Knockout Lesson in Character and Compassion

Chicago, USA : Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov drew a full house at McCormick Place on Sunday at an event titled “An Evening with Khabib Nurmagomedov,” organised by the Miftaah Institute in collaboration with Insight Hospital. The interaction brought together a diverse audience from across the city’s Muslim community.

Speaking in his characteristically understated manner, Mr. Nurmagomedov reflected on the values that guide his public life. He said he consciously distances himself from the trappings of fame, noting that he prefers to keep worldly pursuits “in the hand, not in the heart,” so that letting go becomes effortless when the time demands. His remarks drew sustained attention from the gathering, many of whom had come to hear him address issues beyond the sporting arena.

Referring to the moral example of Prophet Muhammad PBUH, he recounted the Prophet’s act of forgiveness towards his companions after the Battle of Uhud. Strength, Mr. Nurmagomedov observed, lies not in anger or retribution but in the capacity to forgive.

While the evening maintained a contemplative tone, it was punctuated with light-hearted moments. Attendees enjoyed informal interactions, refreshments, and a brief display of competitive spirit as scholars and guests tested their skills on boxing punch machines. Many in the audience waited patiently for selfies with Mr. Nurmagomedov, who obliged with characteristic ease.

In his remarks, Dr. Tajammul Hussain, founder of the Chicago Muslim Medical Alliance (CMMA), spoke of the continuing philanthropic initiatives undertaken by CMMA and Insight Hospital. Their work, he said, is rooted in the principles of service and compassion that informed the institutions’ founding vision.

The programme concluded with prayers and expressions of gratitude.
