A Perfectly Spelled Homecoming for Champion Faizan Zaki

Hyderabad, December 27: When Faizan Zaki walked into Media Plus Auditorium in Hyderabad, it seemed like a homecoming spelled in triumph. The applause that greeted him overwhelmed his parents, who had been cherishing such warm reception in the United States, where they live. The reaction was no different from intellectuals, academicians,  and well-wishers gathered to felicitate the young prodigy whose achievement brought him global fame and recognition. Faizan, who lives in Texas, is in Hyderabad on a short visit – his first since winning the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May, has an uncommon intimacy with words.

The programme, organised by the Media Plus Foundation, opened with a screening of Faizan’s winning moment – an instant that froze years of preparation into a single word. In the final round, marking a remarkable comeback after finishing runner-up in 2024, Faizan beat over 240 spellers to lift the Scripps Cup and a $50,000 cash prize. His winning word, éclaircissement – a French term meaning clarification – sealed the championship.

The significance of the victory lay in its rarity. At just 13 years of age, Faizan became the first runner-up in more than two decades to return and win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, a competition known for its unforgiving nature, where a single error can end years of effort.

Speaking at the event, Faizan offered a glimpse into the discipline behind the triumph. He said his preparation involved four to five hours of training on weekdays and nearly six to seven hours on weekends, sustained consistently over several years.

The journey, he noted, was ‘demanding but deeply rewarding’. Those close to him say Faizan has always had a natural flair for words, but the young champion was quick to acknowledge that talent alone was not enough. Thanking his parents, he spoke about the sacrifices they made to support his preparation, crediting them for providing structure, encouragement, and stability through the long years of training.

Faizan also spoke warmly about the affection he has received since his win. He said he was humbled by the appreciation shown by people in Hyderabad and expressed deep gratitude for the warmth with which he was welcomed.

Interacting freely with the audience, he re-spelt his winning word, posed for photographs with admirers, and even participated in an impromptu quiz of difficult spellings, drawing enthusiastic participation from spectators. Faizan carried with him the Scripps Cup, a porcelain-and-wood trophy, he won at the championship, holding it proudly as cameras clicked. Speaking to the media, he said he was determined to continue striving for excellence and to make Hyderabad and India proud.

Present on the occasion were Faizan’s parents, his grandmother Noorani Begum, and his twin sister, who watched on as the young champion navigated the attention with quiet composure. Faizan’s mother, speaking emotionally, lauded his achievement and reflected on the years of commitment that led to this victory. The gathering included several prominent figures from academic, social, and public life including Dr. Altaf Akbar, Director of Dr. Akbar Eye Superspecialty Hospital, Dr. Nazia Afrose, Zafar Javeed, Secretary of the Sultan-ul-Uloom Education Society, MESCO Secretary Dr. Iftekhar, Dr. Mushtaq Ali, Vice President of All India Majlis-e-Tameer-e-Millat, Dawn High School Chairman Fazlullah Khurram, Chief Editor Gawah Dr. Syed Fazil Hussain Parvez, Dr. Faisal Mustafa.

Former Law Minister Asif Pasha, a nonagenarian, attended the programme as the chief guest. Members of Faizan Zaki’s family, including his parents, grandmother Noorani Begum, and his twin sister, were also present on the occasion. As one speaker observed during the felicitation, achievements of this scale are rare. And when they do arrive, they remind us that age is no bar for brilliance and behind every perfectly spelled word lies a belief in perseverance, patience, and hardwork.
