The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has launched a WhatsApp service that allows members to check their provident fund balance, view their latest five transactions and access passbook information without navigating the member portal for these routine details. The service was launched by Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on November 1, during EPFO’s 74th Foundation Day event.
EPFO has published +91 87964 41800 as the number for the service on its verified X account. Members can save the number and send “Hi” on WhatsApp to begin. The service also offers guidance related to the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PMVBRY).
How do you check your PF balance on WhatsApp?
- Save +91 87964 41800 in your phone contacts.
- Open WhatsApp and start a chat with the number.
- Send Hi and follow the prompts to choose the available service and language.
- Keep the mobile number registered with your Universal Account Number (UAN) available. You may be asked to complete an identity-verification step.
- Select the option for PF balance, passbook information or recent transactions.
Before sending any message, check that the account is EPFO’s verified WhatsApp account. Do not use numbers forwarded in unofficial messages or search advertisements.
What services are available?
- PF balance: View the balance information associated with your EPF account.
- Passbook: Access or retrieve passbook information.
- Recent transactions: View the latest five transactions recorded for the account.
- PMVBRY assistance: Receive guidance and support related to requirements under the employment-linked incentive scheme.
The announcement describes these as information and guidance services. It does not say that members can submit a PF withdrawal claim, change bank details or complete every UAN-related task through WhatsApp. Use the official EPFO member portal for services that are not listed in the WhatsApp announcement.
What is the new automatic settlement for inactive PF accounts?
At the same Foundation Day event, EPFO also launched a separate automatic-settlement facility for eligible inoperative accounts. Aadhaar-verified inoperative EPF accounts with balances of up to ₹1,000 can be settled without the member filing an individual claim. EPFO will initiate settlement after the prescribed identity and bank-account verification.
The Labour Ministry said the initiative is expected to benefit approximately one lakh accounts involving around ₹5 crore. The announcement did not provide a date by which every eligible account will be credited. Members should therefore check their bank and EPFO records rather than assume that a payment has already been made.
Does every old or inactive PF account qualify?
No. The automatic facility is limited to accounts that EPFO classifies as inoperative, that are Aadhaar-verified and that have a balance of ₹1,000 or less. Merely changing jobs, leaving an employer or not seeing a recent contribution does not by itself establish eligibility for automatic settlement.
Members with balances above ₹1,000, incomplete KYC or unresolved identity or bank details should use the EPFO member portal or contact EPFO through its official channels to check the status of their account.
How can members avoid EPF WhatsApp fraud?
- Use only the number published by EPFO on its verified social-media account: +91 87964 41800.
- Check the verified account details inside WhatsApp before sharing any information.
- Never disclose your UAN password, bank password, debit-card PIN or OTP to a caller or another person claiming to represent EPFO.
- Enter a verification code only within the official service flow you initiated; never forward it to anyone.
- Do not install remote-access apps or pay a “release fee” to receive PF money.
- For account claims and other services, begin at the official EPFO website.
